Peer reviewedBernstein, Mark E. – Journal of Child Language, 1983
When asked to identify "chairs" from a series of pictures and order them as best examples, adults used contextual clues about the objects' function in their judgments. Medin, Douglas L.; Smith, Edward E. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1981
How strategies affect learning of categories that lack necessary and sufficient attributes is explored. The authors propose that strategy variations induced by instructions affect only the amount of information represented about attributes, not processes operating on representations. An experiment required subjects to classify schematic faces into…

Peer reviewedMcIlvane, W. J.; And Others – Research in Developmental Disabilities, 1992
Two experiments with a total of 17 adolescents or adults with severe mental retardation evaluated the potential of exclusion procedures (selection of an undefined object in comparison with a defined object) as a means of training basic naming skills. Reliable exclusion and naming performance were demonstrated in nearly all subjects. (DB)

Peer reviewedSmeets, Paul M.; Barnes-Holmes, Dermot; Roche, Bryan – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 2001
Trained preschoolers and adults on three sets of successive discriminations with stimuli labeled A, B, and R. Tested for derived stimulus-response relations and stimulus-stimulus relations. Adults displayed class-consistent B-R and A-B performances over all conditions. Children's display of class-consistent B-R performance varied by training…
