GenAI in Academia: The Case for Transparency and Accountability
David Troy
Community College Enterprise, v31 n1 p47-59 2025
This paper argues that generative AI has become ubiquitous in academia, making irrelevant the debates about whether or not to allow it. Instead, the author advocates for transparency and accountability frameworks that acknowledge AI's presence while preserving academic integrity. The paper examines the challenges educators face: unreliable detection methods, lack of expert knowledge among faculty, and students' unsanctioned use of AI tools. The author contends that AI companies should implement systems to track and identify AI-generated content--similar to plagiarism detection tools for human sources. By developing clear guidelines for appropriate AI use and establishing technological solutions for attribution, educators can harness AI's educational potential while maintaining the core values of authentic learning and original thinking. The paper concludes that responsible AI usage requires collaboration among educators, students, institutions, and AI developers to create systems that integrate AI effectively, while preserving educational standards.
