Vincent, Annette; Ross, Dianne – Learning Organization, 2001
Describes multiple intelligences, personality types, and learning styles. Identifies online instruments for identifying them. Gives strategies for teaching each type. (Contains 26 references.) (SK)

Olson, Allan – American School Board Journal, 2000
The Northwest Evaluation Association, serving over 300 U.S. school districts, is developing an Internet-enabled assessment system that adapts questions to each student's performance. Shorter, adaptive tests help students avoid frustrations or boredom caused by too-difficult or -easy questions. Scores are as valid as traditional test scores. (MLH)

Ahrens, Kathleen – Journal of East Asian Linguistics, 2001
Demonstrates that both meanings of an ambiguity are accessed at the onset of the ambiguity when the context is biased towards the secondary meaning. This evidence does not support the context-dependent model, which says that contextual bias should aid the processor in selecting a meaning. (Author/VWL)

Brown-Schmidt, Sarah; Tanenhaus, Michael K. – Journal of Memory and Language, 2006
In two experiments, naive participants took turns telling each other to click on a target picture while gaze was monitored. Critical trials included a "contrast" picture that differed from the target only in size. In both experiments, the timing of speakers' fixations on the contrast predicted whether the contrast was encoded in a phrase with a…

Williams, John E.; Weed, Nathan C. – Assessment, 2004
There are eight commercially available computer-based test interpretations (CBTIs) for the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2), of which few have been empirically evaluated. Prospective users of these programs have little scientific data to guide choice of a program. This study compared ratings of these eight CBTIs. Test users…

McCrudden, Matthew T.; Schraw, Gregory; Kambe, Gretchen – Journal of Educational Psychology, 2005
The authors examined the effect of prereading relevance instructions on reading time and learning for 2 types of text. Experiment 1 found that relevance instructions increased learning for relevant segments without increasing reading time when reading a scientific text sentence by sentence on a computer. In contrast, the same segments were learned…

Leeson, Heidi V. – International Journal of Testing, 2006
In addition to the potential that computer-based testing (CBT) offers, empirical evidence has found that identical computerized and paper-and-pencil tests have not produced equivalent test-taker performance. Referred to as the "mode effect," previous literature has identified many factors that may be responsible for such differential performance.…

Kelly, P. Adam – Journal of Educational Computing Research, 2005
Powers, Burstein, Chodorow, Fowles, and Kukich (2002) suggested that automated essay scoring (AES) may benefit from the use of "general" scoring models designed to score essays irrespective of the prompt for which an essay was written. They reasoned that such models may enhance score credibility by signifying that an AES system measures the same…

Huitzing, Hiddo A. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 2004
This article shows how set covering with item sampling (SCIS) methods can be used in the analysis and preanalysis of linear programming models for test assembly (LPTA). LPTA models can construct tests, fulfilling a set of constraints set by the test assembler. Sometimes, no solution to the LPTA model exists. The model is then said to be…

Rose, Michael; Haider, Hilde; Weiller, Cornelius; Buchel, Christian – Learning & Memory, 2004
In a previous functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study we demonstrated an involvement of the medial temporal lobe (MTL) during an implicit learning task. We concluded that the MTL was engaged because of the complex contingencies that were implicitly learned. In addition, the basal ganglia demonstrated effects of a paralleled…

Wiberg, Marie – Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics, 2003
A criterion-referenced computerized test is expressed as a statistical hypothesis problem. This admits that it can be studied by using the theory of optimal design. The power function of the statistical test is used as a criterion function when designing the test. A formal proof is provided showing that all items should have the same item…

Dyehouse, Melissa A.; Bennett, Deborah E. – Assessment for Effective Intervention, 2006
This study investigated the validity of a statewide alternate assessment program, IASEP (Indiana Assessment System of Educational Proficiencies) by examining supporting profile patterns on the 100 core IASEP items of individuals with significant disabilities. Participants were 5,192 students ranging in age from 7-21 years with special education…

Keller, Bess – Education Week, 2004
Putting prospective teachers through standardized interviews regarding their approach to the job might fulfill a sorting function, but it can prove to be time-consuming on both sides. Online applications, though they can be relatively quick and easy, tend to give a school district too little information about the real-world potential of…

Crow, Linda – Journal of College Science Teaching, 2005
The application of technology to educational settings has always been an interesting phenomenon. Each new technological advance is described as a panacea for whatever ails education at that moment. As people move closer to more current times, the influence of personal computers and the rise of the internet has affected the educational setting in…

Rotou, Ourania; Patsula, Liane; Steffen, Manfred; Rizavi, Saba – ETS Research Report Series, 2007
Traditionally, the fixed-length linear paper-and-pencil (P&P) mode of administration has been the standard method of test delivery. With the advancement of technology, however, the popularity of administering tests using adaptive methods like computerized adaptive testing (CAT) and multistage testing (MST) has grown in the field of measurement…
