Peer reviewedO'Brien, Thomas C.; Casey, Shirley A. – School Science and Mathematics, 1983
Eighty-seven pupils in grades 4-6 completed five multiplication examples and wrote a problem for another example. They were reasonably proficient, with mean scores of 82 percent in grade 4, 75 percent in grade 5, and 97 percent in grade 6. They did less well on developing a problem. (MNS)

Peer reviewedScheuer, Donald W., Jr.; Williams, David E. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1979
Masters to be removed and copied are given. The worksheets are designed to reinforce computational skills and the concepts of largest or smallest numbers, as well as to provide practice is using a straightedge. (MK)
Descriptors: Addition, Computation, Division, Educational Practices
Peer reviewedHaigh, Gordon – Mathematics in School, 1990
Discusses a number series made from the multiplication of numbers to digits. Presents a number series for diverse multiplication numbers. (YP)
Descriptors: Arithmetic, Computation, Elementary Education, Elementary School Mathematics
Peer reviewedMcNamara, Danielle S. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1995
The effects of generating versus reading the answers to multiplication problems were studied with 28 2nd graders who had not yet been taught multiplication. Results are explained in terms of a procedural account of the advantage after retention interval for generation. Instructional applications are discussed. (SLD)

Peer reviewedWilliams, Dawn M.; Collins, Belva C. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1994
This study evaluated the effectiveness of the constant time delay procedure, while comparing the efficiency of using teacher-selected and student-selected material prompts, in teaching multiplication facts to 4 male students with learning disabilities (ages 9 to 13). Results indicated that the time delay procedure was most efficient when students…

Peer reviewedLeFevre, Jo-Anne; Liu, Jing – Mathematical Cognition, 1997
Examines adults from China and Canada solving single-digit multiplication problems. Reports that Chinese adults were faster and made fewer errors than Canadian adults, and Chinese adults made more errors that reflect verbal-production processes that may occur after retrieval whereas Canadian adults made more errors that reflect retrieval…

Peer reviewedCawley, John F. – Remedial and Special Education, 2002
This article makes the case for an alternative type of mathematics instruction for students with disabilities using multiplication. It explains how educators can skip addition and subtraction in computation instruction and start with multiplication by controlling for two elements: counting through 10 and place value. Word problems are also…

Moser, James M. – 1979
This study was an attempt to provide some evidence on the effects of calculator usage with primary-age children. Specifically, the study compared the performance of children who had access to calculators for an extended period of time, and whose teachers used calculators in specified instructional ways, with children who did not have access to…

Cox, Linda S. – 1974
Five reports from a 2-year study are presented. Frequencies and descriptions of systematic errors in the four algorithms in arithmetic were studied in upper-middle income, regular, and special education classrooms involving 744 children. Children were screened for adequate knowledge of basic facts and for receiving prior instruction on the…

Morley, Arthur – Mathematics Teaching, 1978
Described are two methods of calculating developed by the Dutch WISKOBAS Project: addition and subtraction with a loop abacus and multiplication using a grid model. (MP)
Descriptors: Addition, Algorithms, Cognitive Development, Computation
Yeo, Dorian – 2003
This book explores how primary school children with dyslexia or dyspraxia and difficulty in math can learn math and provides practical support and detailed teaching suggestions. It considers cognitive features that underlie difficulty with mathematics generally or with specific aspects of mathematics. It outlines the ways in which children usually…

Williams, Lynda Patterson – 2000
The purpose of the study was to compare two methods of learning multiplication facts in order to develop speed and accuracy. The researcher conducted the action research project with a seventh grade enrichment class, which met for seven weeks during the school year. As part of the curriculum students were provided with activities to refine their…

Peer reviewedLitwiller, Bonnie H.; Duncan, David R. – Mathematics Teacher, 1982
Activities that can be used for maintenance of computational skills and can lead to the discovery of a pattern verifiable by an algebraic procedure are noted. The language of algebra is used in nonroutine settings, with several challenges for further exploration. (MP)
