Peer reviewedHanson, Bradley A.; Brennan, Robert L. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1990
Using several data sets, the relative performance of the beta binomial model and two more general strong true score models in estimating several indices of classification consistency is examined. It appears that the beta binomial model can provide inadequate fits to raw score distributions compared to more general models. (TJH)

Peer reviewedMarkey, Karen – Library Trends, 1988
Describes four approaches to art historical scholarship, including iconography, and identifies the common characteristics of several iconographical research collections. Peer reviewedPaulsen, Michael B.; Feldman, Kenneth A. – Journal of Higher Education, 1995
The meaning and dimensions of the construct of scholarship are explored, using a four-function paradigm as an analytic framework for deducing four basic categories of scholarship (teaching, service, research and graduate training, academic citizenship). The paradigm helps explain the nature and functions of college faculty work. Comparisons are…

Peer reviewedRoss, Rosemary E. – Information Technology and Libraries, 1993
Describes a study that was conducted to determine the types of records found in OCLC and WLN (Washington Library Network) for new monographs being cataloged at the Central Washington University library. Highlights include a summary of pertinent literature; hit rates; classification numbers; duplicate records; and serial and monograph records.…

Peer reviewedCousins, Shirley Anne – Journal of Documentation, 1992
Investigation of retrieval performance of controlled vocabulary derived from natural language terms in tables of contents and book indexes assumed that controlled vocabulary representative of users' queries should adequately represent documents' contents. Queries were indexed using Library of Congress Subject Headings (LSCH), Dewey Decimal…

Peer reviewedZimmerman, Donald W.; Zumbo, Bruno D. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1993
Comparisons of the Wilcoxon test, Friedman test, and repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) on ranks in a computer simulation show that the Friedman test performs like the sign test whereas the ANOVA performs like the Wilcoxon test. Classification of these tests in introductory statistics textbooks should be revised. (SLD)

Peer reviewedPrice, Lydia J. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1993
The ability of the NORMIX algorithm to recover overlapping population structures was compared to the OVERCLUS procedure and another clustering procedure in a Monte Carlo study. NORMIX is found to be more accurate than other procedures in recovering overlapping population structure when appropriate implementation options are specified. (SLD)

Peer reviewedRoberts, K. – Journal of Education and Work, 1998
Such concepts as employment and unemployment have different meanings in former Communist countries. A typology of postcommunist school-to-work transition using Western concepts of private sector, public sector, self-employment, and unemployment can accurately describe the situation in the transition to a market economy. (SK)

Peer reviewedPapafragou, Anna; Massey, Christine; Gleitman, Lila – Cognition, 2002
Two studies investigated whether language-specific patterns encoding manner and direction of motion in English and Greek affect adult and child speakers' performance on nonlinguistic motion tasks and linguistic descriptions of these motion events. Although the two linguistic groups differed in linguistic preferences, nonlinguistic task performance…

Peer reviewedBussey, Kay – Child Development, 1999
Investigated 4-, 8-, and 11-year-olds' ability to categorize intentionally false and true statements as lies and truths. Found that older children were more likely to categorize false statements as lies and true statements as truths than were 4-year-olds. Antisocial lies were rated as most serious, and "white lies" as least serious.…

Peer reviewedBlanchet, Nicole; Dunham, Philip J.; Dunham, Frances – Developmental Psychology, 2001
Preschoolers viewed stimulus sets comprised of a sample picture and three types of matches and were asked to choose a match that "went with" each sample. Children's choices indicated that a shift occurs between 3 and 4 years of age from a taxonomic bias to a thematic bias. Animate sample stimuli enhanced children's tendency to adopt…

Ivinson, Gabrielle; Duveen, Gerard – British Journal of Sociology of Education, 2005
The study drew on Bernstein's theory and Moscovici's theory of Social Representations to investigate how children in classrooms with different types of structuration developed social representation of the curriculum. Comparable case studies were carried out in schools chosen to reflect three types of pedagogy according to Bernstein's typology.…

In adults, visual search for a colour target is facilitated if the target and distractors fall in different colour categories (e.g. Daoutis, Pilling, & Davies, in press). The present study explored category effects in children's colour search. The relationship between linguistic colour categories and perceptual categories was addressed by…
