Peer reviewedBarton, Judy A. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1988
A developmentally sensitive problem-solving task--the 20-Question Game--was used to examine development and treatment variables among 48 learning disabled and 48 normal boys at two age levels (8-13 years old). Results indicate that both younger boys and learning disabled boys demonstrated less efficient problem-solving skills than did others. (TJH)

Laughton, Joan; Morris, Nancy T. – Learning Disabilities Research, 1989
Comparison of the written stories of 96 learning-disabled and 96 non-learning-disabled students found significant differences at grades 3, 4, and 5 in students' inclusion of a complete story grammar. No differences were found at grade 6. (Author/DB)

Peer reviewedScott, Marcia S.; And Others – Learning Disabilities Research and Practice, 1993
This study of children ages 6-8 found that the rhyming ability of normally achieving students (n=33) and students (n=33) with learning disabilities (LD) was much higher than that of students (n=33) with mild mental retardation (MMR). Most of the LD children could and most of the MMR students could not generate rhymes. (Author/JDD)

Peer reviewedBjaalid, Inger-Kristin; And Others – Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research, 1995
Components of word recognition were studied for 19 dyslexic Norwegian 15-year olds and 19 normal readers matched for relevant variables other than reading ability. Phonological ability was the main factor influencing the variance in word reading among normal readers, but this factor had no significant role for dyslexics. (SLD)
Descriptors: Ability, Comparative Analysis, Dyslexia, High School Students
Peer reviewedPolloway, Edward A.; And Others – Learning Disabilities Research and Practice, 1992
Teachers and parents of 45 students (ages 8-17) with learning disabilities completed the Homework Problem Checklist. The study found that students with learning disabilities experienced nearly two and a half times the level of difficulty with specific homework problems as their nondisabled peers. (JDD)

Normally achieving, learning-disabled and mildly retarded students (n=148, ages 6-9) were trained to select the odd picture of a 3-picture array. Mildly retarded subjects showed large, consistent performance differences from the other groups, but learning-disabled subjects could not effectively be distinguished from normally achieving peers.…
