Reich, Phyllis; Biever, Erik J. – College and Research Libraries, 1991
Describes a study that was conducted to determine how well subject authority lists, or thesauri, control indexing vocabulary. Indexer consistency using the Commonwealth Agricultural Bureaux (CAB) thesaurus was tested by comparing indexing done by CAB and by National Agricultural Library (NAL) indexers. (six references) (LRW)

Weinberg, Bella Hass – Library Resources and Technical Services, 1990
Compares and evaluates the indexes to the 1978 and 1988 editions of AACR2. The index format is examined, national and international standards are cited, syndetic structure is discussed, examples of missing entries and cross-references are provided, the chain index structure is described, and recommendations for future editions are presented.…

Kimmel, Stacey – Database, 1996
Provides an overview of robots that retrieve World Wide Web documents and index data and then store it in a database. Nine robot-generated databases are described, including record content, services, search features, and sample search results; and sidebars discuss the controversy about Web robots and other resource discovery tools. (LRW)

Rowbottom, Mary E.; Willett, Peter – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1982
Applies a recently suggested method for the automatic indexing of full text to extracts from the Brown Corpus and finds that scientific and technical extracts give rise to a larger number of index terms than social science and humanities extracts. Four tables and an 8-item reference list accompany the text. (Author/JL)

Vassilakopoulos, Michael; Manolopoulos, Yannis – Information Systems, 1995
Presents an improved inverted region quadtree variation called Dynamic Inverted Quadtree that is able to support and index a pictorial database. Pattern-searching algorithms are described, and the space needs of Fully Inverted and Dynamic Inverted Quadtrees are analytically compared based on a model of image randomness expressed as a branching…

Brooks, Terrence A. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1993
This test of the Strategy of Unlimited Aliasing, an indexing method that places terms from several indexers for the same information object in one index, utilized bibliographic records from the ERIC, LISA (Library and Information Science Abstracts), and ISA (Information Science Abstracts) databases. de Jong-Hofman, M. W. – Online Review, 1981
In order to compare effects of input processing on information retrieval in three databases, 25 articles from a specific journal were examined. Nicholson, Scott – Information Technology and Libraries, 1997
Discussion of Web databases, or search engines for the Internet, presents a series of questions that can be used to analyze these tools based on library literature. Six search engines are analyzed; collection methods, indexing, and abstracting are compared; and a proposal for a future ideal Web database is included. (Author/LRW)

Westland, J. Christopher – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1991
Discusses the cost of constructing a hypertext database and suggests cost forecasting approaches that can be used to determine whether organizations can internally fund a hypertext database, or whether producers can afford to market hypertext databases. Production costs in differing hypertext strategies are also compared. (27 references) (LRW)
