Peer reviewedHaber, Ralph Norman; Haber, Lyn R. – Visible Language, 1981
Reviews work on three areas of visual information that are available to readers: information provided by the conventional arrangements of the print on the page, by the features of each letter, and by the shapes of entire words. (HOD)

Peer reviewedArcavi, Abraham – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 2003
Defines visualization as the product and the process of creation, interpretation, and reflection upon pictures and images. Analyzes, exemplifies, and reflects upon the many different and rich roles that it can and should play in the learning and doing of mathematics. Discusses limitations and possible sources of difficulties visualization may pose…

Peer reviewedWeiler, Michael David; Bernstein, Jane Holmes; Bellinger, David; Waber, Deborah P. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 2002
This study compared children with either attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (n=24), reading disability (RD) (n=33), both (n=9), or controls. Children with ADHD were characterized by difficulty with a visual search task whereas children with RD had difficulty with an auditory processing task. Specifically, children with ADHD…

Peer reviewedSussman, Harvey M. – Psychological Review, 1989
The neuronal model shown to code sound-source azimuth in the barn owl by H. Wagner et al. in 1987 is used as the basis for a speculative brain-based human model, which can establish contrastive phonetic categories to solve the problem of perception "non-invariance." (SLD)
Descriptors: Acoustics, Animal Behavior, Cognitive Processes, Encoding (Psychology)
Peer reviewedRock, Irvin; And Others – Cognitive Psychology, 1989
Several experiments were undertaken with a total of 111 undergraduates. Subjects attempted to imagine how three-dimensional novel wire objects would appear from viewpoints other than that of the subject. Subjects were unable to perform this task without making use of strategies that circumvent the process of visualization. (TJH)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Higher Education, Pattern Recognition, Spatial Ability
Peer reviewedCarter, Kathy; And Others – Journal of Teacher Education, 1988
Findings are presented from a study designed to analyze qualitative differences in perceptual skills, measured in an educational context, between and among experienced, nominally experienced, and inexperienced teachers. Results suggest the groups differed in their ability to perceive and interpret classroom information. (IAH)
Descriptors: Classroom Environment, Cognitive Processes, Comparative Analysis, Information Utilization
Peer reviewedChaiken, Scott R. – Intelligence, 1994
In experiments involving 178 and 190 military recruits, spatial, quantitative, and verbal inspection time (IT) and visual search (VS) tasks and an intelligence test were administered. Results indicate that IT performance has a component related to intelligence tests and an independent component related to processing speed tests such as VS. (SLD)
Descriptors: Cognitive Ability, Cognitive Processes, Intelligence, Intelligence Tests
Peer reviewedLang, Peter J.; And Others – Psychological Review, 1990
Evidence that the vigor of the startle reflex varies systematically with the organism's emotional state is reviewed. A theory elucidating this relationship suggests how amplitude of eyeblink response to a probe may be modulated by affective content of perception and thought. Implications for research on emotion are outlined. (SLD)
Descriptors: Affective Behavior, Attention, Brain Hemisphere Functions, Cognitive Processes
