Peer reviewedLacher, Miriam R. – Child Development, 1976
Effects of action content and verbal codability of stimulus pictures, parental occupational status and verbal intelligence upon nonverbal serial recall were investigated in white first graders. (Author/SB)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Early Childhood Education, Lower Class, Memory
Peer reviewedKeitz, Suzanne M.; Gounard, Beverley Roberts – Educational Gerontology, 1976
Prior research has shown that adults generally remember pictorial stimuli better than printed words. The present study was designed to determine whether memory for these two visual modes might be differentially affected by age. These results indicate that memory processes in the elderly differ quantitatively and not qualitatively. (Author)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Cognitive Processes, Educational Gerontology, Gerontology
Engle, Randall W.; Mobley, Linda A. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
This study tests the idea that visual presentation leads to higher performance on a delayed recall test than auditory presentation. It is predicted that the normal immediate free recall procedure yields a different pattern of results on a delayed test than a condition having immediate recall of each list. (CLK)
Descriptors: Auditory Perception, Auditory Stimuli, Cognitive Processes, Experimental Psychology
Singer, Murray – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
Reports on four experiments designed to compare the accuracy of the listener's memory for information associated with the thematic and nonthematic portions of sentences. Results are consistent with the identification of the nonthematic portion of a sentence as the locus of new ideas conveyed to the language recipient. (CLK)
Descriptors: Adjectives, Cognitive Processes, Determiners (Languages), Experimental Psychology
Peer reviewedPrior, Margot R.; Chen, C. S. – Journal of Autism and Childhood Schizophrenia, 1976
Descriptors: Autism, Children, Cognitive Processes, Exceptional Child Research
Huttenlocher, Janellen; Newcombe, Nora – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
Reports on 5 experiments investigating the effect of blocking words according to semantic category on ordered recall in adults and young children. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Adults, Children, Cognitive Processes, Language Processing
Moscovitch, Morris; Craik, Fergus I. M. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
Three experiments were conducted to examine the relations between retrieval and encoding in a levels-of-processing framework. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Cues, Language Processing, Language Research
Pociask, Fredrick D.; Morrison, Gary – Association for Educational Communications and Technology, 2004
Human working memory can be defined as a component system responsible for the temporary storage and manipulation of information related to higher level cognitive behaviors, such as understanding and reasoning (Baddeley, 1992; Becker & Morris, 1999). Working memory, while able to manage a complex array of cognitive activities, presents with an…

Schiller, Pam – 1999
Noting current brain development research, this book offers simple, straightforward ways to boost children's brain power with active exploration, repetition, sensory exploration, laughter, and more. The chapters describe how and why the brain develops and explain how parents can give their children the best foundation for future learning.…

Peer reviewedWelsandt, Roy F., Jr.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1973
The present report contains two experiments dealing with the relationship between development and an initial information processing stage. (Author/RK)
Descriptors: Adults, Age Differences, Child Psychology, Cognitive Processes

Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Experiments, Information Processing, Information Storage
Peer reviewedConrad, R. – British Journal of Psychology, 1972
Study was carried out to examine the feasibility of identifying by a short test whether or not any particular profoundly deaf school child uses a speech code in short-term memory for verbal material. (Author)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Consonants, Data Analysis, Deafness
Klatzky, Robert L.; Smith, Edward E. – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1972
Results indicate that Ss expectancy for a given test stimulus probability, has its effect on the encoding or decision stage of the memory-scanning process. (Authors)
