Morris, C. Donald; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1977
Levels of processing were manipulated as a function of acquisition task and type of recognition test in three experiments. Experiment I showed semantic acquisition to be superior to rhyme acquisition given a standard recognition test, whereas rhyme acquisition was superior given a rhyming recognition test. Results are interpreted and discussed.…

Hoosain, Rumjahn – International Journal of Behavioral Development, 1986
With reference to Chinese language and its unique orthography, evidence for language-related differences in manners of information processing is reviewed. These differences include visual form perception, manipulation of numbers, and memory versus manipulation and elaboration of verbal information. (Author/RH)

Bray, Norman W.; Turner, Lisa A. – Intelligence, 1987
It is shown how typical analyses of strategic behavior focus on the "problem of remembering" based on the experimenter's conceptualization of optimum task performance. A new definition of a strategy is suggested in which strategies are seen as attempts to solve the "problem of remembering" as understood by the person. (Author/LMO)

Desmond, Roger Jon – Critical Studies in Mass Communication, 1985
Reviews research on aspects of metacognition in children's comprehension of television, particularly how skills in meta-memory, meta-attention, and meta-social cognition-correlate with comprehension. (PD)

Woodall, W. Gill; Folger, Joseph P. – Communication Monographs, 1985
Two investigations provide evidence that nonverbal cues (hand gestures) play a role as contextual cues in the retrieval of verbal messages in conversations. (PD)

Ghatala, Elizabeth S.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1986
Second-grade children were explicitly supplied with zero, one, two, or three components of information to specify the respective contributions of various sources and amounts of acquired strategy-utility information. Metacognitive knowledge was evidenced only when the training regiment included the complete set of critical metacognitive components.…

Howe, Mark L.; And Others – Child Development, 1985
A stages-of-learning model was used to examine effects of picture-word manipulation on storage and retrieval differences between disabled and nondisabled grade 2 and 6 children. Results showed that disabled students are poorer at memory tasks and in developing the ability to reliably retrieve information than nondisabled children. (Author/RH)

Whitaker, Joseph H.; And Others – Mental Retardation, 1985
A test of the effect of bilingualism on cognitive performance involved 45 seven and eight-year-olds with mild mental retardation (low language proficiency, high language proficency, and monolingual English groups). Analysis of three Piagetian tasks and an information processing task indicated that high proficient bilingual Ss' performance was…

Gernsbacher, Morton Ann – Cognitive Psychology, 1985
Six experiments investigated loss of availability of surface form in sentence comprehension. Explanations for the loss included: (1) linguistic hypothesis; (2) memory limitations hypothesis; (3) integration hypothesis; and (4) processing shift hypothesis. (LMO)

Burton, John K. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1986
The effects of two types of interspersed mathemagenic postquestions (superordinate and subordinate) on cognitive capacity engagement during reading and subsequent performance on a recall posttest were investigated using the secondary task paradigm. (Author/LMO)
