Cherkes, Miriam; Pianta, Robert – Academic Therapy, 1980
A curriculum model in logic is proposed for learning disabled students based on reasoning and content needs. A diagnostic test with probes yields a profile of the child's reasoning ability and pinpoints areas of strengths and weaknesses. Three levels of instruction are provided: thematic concrete, specific concrete, and abstract. (CL)
Descriptors: Abstract Reasoning, Cognitive Processes, Curriculum, Diagnostic Tests
Tripp, David H. – Exceptional Child, 1979
Effects of the CoRT (Cognitive Research Trust) Thinking Project with slow learners in the United Kingdom is discussed. The aim of the project is to provide the framework which helps children arrive at a response to problems. (PHR)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Elementary Secondary Education, Foreign Countries, Intelligence
Peer reviewedKulm, Gerald; Bussmann, Hans – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1980
An eight-phase model of processes involved in mathematics problem solving is presented. At each phase, results from factor-analytic studies are used to suggest abilities relevant and prerequisite for successful completion of the phase. Presentation of the model is followed by a discussion of implications for teaching and research. (Author/MK)
Descriptors: Ability, Cognitive Development, Cognitive Processes, Elementary Secondary Education
Peer reviewedSmetacek, V. – Information Processing and Management, 1979
Defines a "communicate"--the objectification of a subject's internal model of the object of reality by means of a certain set of physical signs--and examines its information value with relation to intelligent systems. (CWM)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Communication (Thought Transfer), Concept Formation, Information Processing
Peer reviewedLawson, Anton E. – Science Education, 1977
Presents a descriptive analogy comparing Piaget's theory of intellectual development to the development of athletic abilities in order to provide insight into Piagetian theory. (SL)
Descriptors: Cognitive Development, Cognitive Processes, Demonstrations (Educational), Descriptive Writing
Peer reviewedBandura, Albert – Psychological Review, 1977
This research presents an integrative theoretical framework to explain and to predict psychological changes achieved by different modes of treatment. This theory states that psychological procedures, whatever their form, alter the level and strength of "self-efficacy". (Editor/RK)
Descriptors: Arousal Patterns, Behavior Change, Behavior Theories, Charts
Peer reviewedAmbalu, D.; And Others – Journal of Child Language, 1997
Explores the interaction between the timing of verb models and the focus of the events to which they refer on verb learning by children. Findings revealed that the movement verb was learned better in the impending condition and the result verb in the completed condition. (seven references) (Author/CK)
Descriptors: Child Language, Cognitive Processes, Context Effect, Language Processing
Peer reviewedWestgate, David; Hughes, Maureen – Language and Education, 1997
Endeavors to reassert the validity of a many-faceted agenda to which qualitative analysis of classroom talk remains central and to present a review of advances made in the gathering and interpretation of talk-evidence so that possible lines of further development can be indicated. (44 references) (Author/CK)
Descriptors: Class Activities, Classroom Communication, Cognitive Processes, Context Effect
Peer reviewedDanna, Frederic; Sebillot, Pascale – Computer Assisted Language Learning, 1997
Focuses on student modeling within an Intelligent Tutoring System. Describes three domain-independent properties that the formalism representing student knowledge and the processes synthesizing this knowledge must possess to build accurate student models for second-language learning. Notes when, how, and where hypothetical reasoning mechanisms…

Peer reviewedHuguet, Pascal; Latane, Bibb – Journal of Communication, 1996
Describes Social Representation Theory (SRT), an important and controversial development in European social constructivism. Argues that, although SRT and Dynamic Social Impact Theory (DSIT) come from different research traditions, they are complementary. Maintains that DSIT goes further in providing a clear mechanism for how dialog creates…

Peer reviewedBorkowski, John G.; And Others – International Journal of Disability, Development and Education, 1989
A literature-based model of good information processing is sketched describing how metacognitive knowledge influences strategy selection and use. Three problems for learning-disabled students in using study strategies productively are discussed: neurological impairments; deficiencies in general world knowledge; and negative beliefs, attitudes, and…

Peer reviewedLederman, Susan J.; Klatzky, Roberta L. – Cognitive Psychology, 1990
Theoretical and empirical issues relating to haptic exploration and the representation of common objects during haptic classification were investigated in 3 experiments involving a total of 112 college students. Results are discussed in terms of a computational model of human haptic object classification with implications for dextrous robot…
Descriptors: Classification, Cognitive Processes, College Students, Exploratory Behavior
Peer reviewedWoodman, Richard W.; Schoenfeldt, Lyle F. – Journal of Creative Behavior, 1990
An interactionist model of creative behavior is proposed, combining elements of the personality, cognitive, and social psychology perspectives on creativity. The model considers the interplay of factors including antecedent conditions, creative behavior, consequences, the individual, cognitive style/ability, personality traits, contextual…

Wong, Bernice Y. L. – Learning Disabilities Research, 1988
The instructional model for intervention research in learning disabilities includes three foci: (1) knowledge inculcation (including declarative, procedural, and metacognitive knowledge); (2) students' cognitive processing of their training activities; and (3) students' motivation to learn. Advantages of the model include ease of linking with any…
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Educational Methods, Intervention, Learning Disabilities
Peer reviewedMeyer, David E.; And Others – Psychological Review, 1988
Theoretical/empirical foundations on which reaction times are measured and interpreted are discussed. Models of human information processing are reviewed. A hybrid procedure and analytical framework are introduced, using a speed-accuracy decomposition technique to analyze the intermediate products of rapid mental processes. Results invalidate many…
