Descriptors: Association Measures, Associative Learning, Cognitive Processes, Hypothesis Testing
Peer reviewedPhillips, Darrell G. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1971
Tested were six levels of a twelve-level hierarchical model for the attainment of concepts leading to the conservation of displacement volume. Presentation was by individual interview using either objects or drawings to present tasks. Results show five of six tested followed anticipated order and that method of presentation showed no significant…

Peer reviewedHoepfner, Ralph; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1970
An attempt to lend empirical support to the structure-of-intellect (SI) model by investigating 10 difficult to separate parallel factors. (Author/CK)
Descriptors: Cognitive Ability, Cognitive Processes, Intellectual Development, Learning Theories
Peer reviewedShaklee, Harriet; Hall, Laurie – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1983
College subjects (n=106) judged a set of 12 covariation problems structured so that each of four judgment rules would produce a distinctive judgment pattern on a problem set. The findings suggest that self-report is a weak basis for conclusions about sources of error in covariation judgment. (Author/PN)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Evaluation Methods, Evaluative Thinking, Higher Education
Peer reviewedSmith, Ellen R. – Reading Horizons, 1983
Reviews recent reading research and points out several implications for classroom reading teachers. Uses T. C. Standal's descriptive model of reading as a framework in which to present the research. (FL)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Educational Theories, Models, Phonology
Merrifield, Philip – New Directions for Testing and Measurement, 1981
An intelligence model of processes and content of thought is proposed. Processes include remembering, evaluating, generating, and transforming, while content is self, forms, ideas, and persons, determining levels of complexity for learning. The TETRA model is compared with J.P. Guilford's aptitude structure of intellect. Theory implications for…

Peer revieweddiSibio, Mary – Review of Educational Research, 1982
Early work by Bartlett in memory theory is contrasted with the more firmly entrenched empirical-associationistic notions of his time. Contemporary lines of research are then discussed within the perspective of this ongoing controversy. A more purely constructive model with active processing during retention, recall, and comprehension is presented.…

Peer reviewedBock, J. Kathryn – Psychological Review, 1982
Constraint on syntax may be reflected in the transient processing demands of lexical retrieval suggesting syntactic-lexical processing interaction. The syntactic structure of utterances appears sensitive to the accessibility of lexical information with more accessibility occurring earlier in sentences. Models of interactions within a…

Peer reviewedDeutsch, Diana; Feroe, John – Psychological Review, 1981
A model for the internal representation of pitch sequences in tonal music is advanced. Pitch sequences are retained as hierarchical networks. At each level, elements are organized as structural units, in accordance with laws of figural goodness. Processing advantages of the system are discussed. (Author/BW)
Descriptors: Auditory Discrimination, Auditory Perception, Auditory Stimuli, Cognitive Processes
Markle, Susan M. – Journal of Instructional Development, 1981
Argues that the ability to generate and use knowledge requires new ways of designing instruction. The development of thinking skills is discussed in terms of creating content, as opposed to using and remembering content, and teaching strategies for such activities are described. Twenty-five references are included. (BK)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Graduate Study, Higher Education, Instructional Design
Macht, Michael L.; O'Brien, Edward J. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1980
Results of three experiments indicated that latency of correct recognition was sensitive to the influence of a priming treatment. The magnitude of the priming effect depended on both the taxonomic frequency of the probe items, and the length of the interval between the prime and the recognition test. (Author/RD)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Context Clues, Higher Education, Memory
Fields, Alan – NSPI Journal, 1980
Looks at an alternative method to linear notes for organizing thoughts when preparing a talk or paper. This method displays the manner in which the relationships of a subject are organized and offers a format for displaying complex inter-dependencies in place of linear notes. (Author/MER)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Diagrams, Information Processing, Models
Peer reviewedPagano, Alicia L. – Journal of Creative Behavior, 1979
