Francis, Wendy S.; Corral, Nuvia I.; Jones, Mary L.; Saenz, Silvia P. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 2008
Cognitive mechanisms underlying repetition priming in picture naming were decomposed in several experiments. Sets of encoding manipulations meant to selectively prime or reduce priming in object identification or word production components of picture naming were combined factorially to dissociate processes underlying priming in picture naming.…

Malone, Kathy L. – Physical Review Special Topics - Physics Education Research, 2008
The modeling instruction pedagogy for the teaching of physics has been proven to be quite effective at increasing the conceptual understanding and problem-solving abilities of students to a much greater extent than that of nonmodeling students. Little research has been conducted concerning the cognitive and metacognitive skills that modeling…

Carpenter, Thomas P.; And Others – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1993
After a year of instruction, 70 kindergarten children were individually interviewed as they solved basic, multistep, and nonroutine word problems. Thirty-two used a valid strategy for all 9 problems, and 44 correctly answered 7 or more problems. Modeling provided a unifying framework for thinking about problem solving. (Author/MDH)

Bireley, Marlene – 1992
This paper presents a review of the major ideas on the nature of intelligence and giftedness. Especially noted are theories of Howard Gardner, Robert Sternberg, and J.P. Das. Gardner expanded traditional notions of intelligence to include such talents as spatial ability, musical intelligence, bodily-kinesthetic intelligence, and interpersonal and…

Hogan, Robert – Human Development, 1974
This paper defines the concept of the dialectic and places it within the context of a well-defined methodology, i.e. that of organicism, which contrasts markedly with the logical empiricism of much contemporary psychology. The paper then points out the relevance of a dialectical perspective for developmental psychology. (Author/CS)

Flower, Linda S.; Hayes, John R. – 1979
The three papers in this report set forth the research methodology and the theory used in one research project to identify the processes involved in writing. The first paper proposes a method, termed protocol analysis, for use in identifying the organization of writing processes. It defines protocol analysis as a means for examining the detailed…

BAKER, FRANK B. – 1966
TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE COGNITIVE PROCESSES INVOLVED IN THE ATTAINMENT OF CONCEPTS BY HUMANS, A MODEL WAS DEVELOPED BY USE OF COMPUTER TECHNIQUES. THE MODEL WAS BASED UPON THEORETICAL GROUNDS, "THINK ALOUD" PROTOCOLS, AND SPECULATIONS ABOUT THE NATURE OF CONCEPT ATTAINMENT. IT WAS DEVELOPED WITH THREE MAJOR ASPECTS--(1) CONTEXTING FUNCTIONS…

Craig, Robert T. – 1976
This experiment tested the hypothesis that cognitive change resulting from information inputs can be represented as linear motion of concepts in multidimensional space. The theoretical background is reviewed and the mathematical derivation of the hypothesis is given. A set of fifteen nations was scaled by 64 undergraduate and graduate students in…

Klahr, David – 1973
An explicit model of the process of quantification which involves the operations of subitizing and counting is described. The general model states that quantification of n items takes place via subitizing when n is less than five and via subitizing and addition (that is, counting) when n is five or larger. The explicit model is stated in the form…

Reeve, Mark B.; And Others – 1970
Recent theories of concept identification have dealt largely with two-category problems in which the correct classification of a stimulus depends on values of a single binary-valued dimension. Such concept identification problems can be solved by a single trial. Two or more dimensional problems would seem to require more complex methods of…
