Jiang, Yang; Cayton-Hodges, Gabrielle A. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 2023
This exploratory study investigated the behaviors and content of onscreen calculator usage by a nationally representative sample of eighth-grade students who responded to items from the 2017 National Assessment of Educational Progress mathematics assessment. Meaningful features were generated from the process data to infer whether students…

Sherman, Milan F.; Cayton, Charity; Walkington, Candace; Funsch, Alexandra – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 2020
Research has demonstrated that textbooks exert a considerable influence on students' learning opportunities and that technology has the potential to transform mathematics instruction. This brief report provides a systematic analysis of how technology tasks are integrated into secondary mathematics curricula by analyzing a sample of 20 textbooks.…

Szetela, Walter – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1979
Specially designed materials were used for teaching trigonometric ratios to 131 ninth- and tenth-grade students, one group using calculators and one not. Results on achievement were mixed. (MP)

Gaslin, William L. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1975
Descriptors: Algorithms, Attitudes, Calculators, Fractions

Hector, Judith H.; Frandsen, Henry – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1981
Results of this study indicated calculator algorithms can serve as an effective alternative instructional strategy where computational skill is an instructional goal. (MP)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Basic Skills, Calculators, College Mathematics

Szetela, Walter – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1982
Two separate and simultaneous studies took place in middle socioeconomic schools. A considerable degree of consistency of results in problem-solving performance with and without calculators was found in the two investigations. Calculator-using groups performed significantly higher than non-calculator groups where differences occurred. (MP)

Koop, Janice B. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1982
This study viewed the impact of calculators on achievement and attitudes and differential effects of this use on various population groups in a community college arithmetic course. Data did not confirm the use of calculators for motivational purposes, inspiring confidence, or increasing problem-solving skills for all types of students. (MP)

Behr, Merlyn J.; Wheeler, Margariete Montague – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1981
Calculator use by kindergarten and first-grade pupils was examined to see whether they could perceive and use the "counter button." Results indicated pupils at this age could use calculators as a tool, and further research is encouraged. (MP)
Descriptors: Addition, Basic Skills, Calculators, Elementary Education

Szetela, Walter; Super, Doug – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1987
For an entire school year, 24 seventh-grade classes were taught problem-solving strategies; in 14 of these classes the instruction was supplemented by calculators. Mixed findings resulted for both problem solving and calculator use. (MNS)
Descriptors: Calculators, Educational Research, Grade 7, Mathematics Instruction

Shumway, Richard J.; And Others – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1981
Investigated was the effect of availability of calculators, calculator-related curriculum resources, consultant resources, and inservice workshops on children's attitudes and achievement in mathematics (grades 2-6). Results indicated no measurable detrimental effects for calculator use. Significant gains on basic facts and achievement were made…

Wheatley, Charlotte L. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1980
A study of 46 sixth graders designed to compare the problem-solving performance of pupils using calculators with that of students not using calculators is reported. The argument that calculator availability facilitates problem solving is supported. (MP)
Descriptors: Calculators, Cognitive Processes, Elementary Education, Elementary School Mathematics

Creswell, John L.; Vaughn, Larry R. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1979
The study concluded that ninth-grade Fundamentals of Mathematics students can achieve at a higher level when using hand-held calculators and a specially designed curriculum. (MK)
Descriptors: Calculators, Decimal Fractions, Educational Research, Experimental Curriculum

Hembree, Ray; Dessart, Donald J. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1986
Findings of 79 research reports were analyzed to assess the effects of calculators on student achievement and attitudes. Except in grade four, use of calculators in concert with traditional mathematics instruction improved average students' basic skills with paper and pencil, both in working exercises and in problem solving. (MNS)
Descriptors: Calculators, Educational Research, Elementary Secondary Education, Mathematics Achievement

Szetela, Walter – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1980
The results of this study indicate no significant differences on two achievement tests and one aptitude test between calculator and non groups. Nevertheless, the investigator notes several advantages of using the calculator. (MK)

Kaput, James J.; Thompson, Patrick W. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1994
Discusses the interactions between technology and research in mathematics education, including computer-assisted instruction, role of technology in learning, use of computer environments to study students' mathematical concept formation, research methodologies, interactive technologies, and lack of technology-related research in the "Journal…
