Explores the causal nature of the association between grade repetition and later adolescent problem behaviors for 197 retained and 204 promoted African-American sixth and seventh graders in two urban middle schools. The effects of a package of instructional methods on the academic achievement, behavior, and social bonding of 77 experimental and 83 control students in grade seven who were low achievers in math are described.
