Sam, A. – National Professional Development Center on Autism Spectrum Disorders, 2016
Based on the principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA), discrete trial training (DTT) is used to develop a new response to a stimulus. DTT is based upon the principle of breaking down behavior into discrete steps called a "single teaching unit" or learning trials. Trials are repeated several times with the learner receiving…

Thompson, Megan J.; McLaughlin, T. F.; Derby, K. Mark – Electronic Journal of Research in Educational Psychology, 2011
Introduction: The purpose of this study was to decrease the number of talk-outs displayed with a 3rd grade student with autism. Peer reviewedRotholz, David A.; Luce, Stephen C. – Education and Treatment of Children, 1983
Alternative reinforcement strategies on a differential reinforcement of low rates of behavior schedule resulted in significant reduction of self-stimulatory behavior of 9- and 11-year-old autistic boys. Efforts were made to match the sensory consequences derived from the reinforcement to those presumed to be maintaining the self-stimulatory…

Peer reviewedMaag, John W.; And Others – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1986
Two short (20-second and 60-second) overcorrection procedures were effective in suppressing stereotypic behaviors of a 7- and a 12-year-old autistic student. (CL)

Peer reviewedRunco, Mark A.; Schreibman, Laura – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1983
Results indicated that parents socially validated the effects of behavior therapy in that they judged the children as significantly improved after treatment, and that the effects of treatment were also socially validated by the parents' indication that they were more willing to interact with the children after treatment than before treatment.…

Peer reviewedRincover, Arnold; Newsom, Crighton D. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1985
In a study of visual discrimination tasks with three autistic children (ages five-six), multiple sensory reinforcers maintained responding over more trials than did multiple edible reinforcers. Single sensory reinforcers and single edibles however, resulted in nearly equal numbers of trials to satiation. Sensory reinforcers produced higher…

Peer reviewedMaag, John W.; And Others – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1986
Effects of sensory extinction procedures on nontargeted self-stimulatory behaviors of two autistic boys (7 and 12 years old) were assessed. In Experiment 1 application of sensory extinction for target behaviors resulted in decreased topographically similar behavior, but no change in dissimilar behavior. In Experiment 2, suppression also occurred…

Peer reviewedDunlap, Glen; And Others – American Journal of Mental Deficiency, 1983
Analysis of effects of intertrial intervals on correct responding and self-stimulatory behavior by four autistic children (6-11 years old) revealed that short intertrial intervals produced decreased levels of self-stimulation and increased levels of correct responding. (Author/CL)

Peer reviewedHughes, Vickie; And Others – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1983
When positive reinforcement was presented via teacher verbalizations in a noncontingent fixed-time schedule, two autistic children (six and nine years old) increased their percentage of correct responding on difficult and easy tasks. (Author/CL)

Hartley, Steven T.; Salzwedel, Kenneth D. – Academic Therapy, 1980
The article presents the case study of an autistic 12-year-old boy who was taught to increase the quality and decrease the size of his written letters. (PHR)

Peer reviewedMaag, John W.; And Others – Education and Treatment of Children, 1986
The study compared the efficacy and setting generalization of sensory extinction and overcorrection in suppressing self-stimulation in two autistic children (ages 7- and 12-years-old). Results indicated that sensory extinction significantly decreased self stimulation in the structured setting but did not generalize to other settings.…

Noncontingent escape (NCE) was used to reduce disruptive behavior in three children (age 4) with autism during regularly scheduled speech therapy sessions. Results showed rapid decreases in disruptive behavior and accompanying increases in compliance across children. Findings suggest that speech therapists can effectively implement NCE. (Author/CR)
