Environmental Controls.
Schneiderman, Helen, Ed.
PAM Repeater, n83 Mar 1994
Environmental control units, or ECUs, are devices or systems which allow for alternate access to electronic or electrical devices and those objects, like draperies and doors, which may be adapted for use with electricity. Such devices offer the person with a mobility limitation the opportunity to control his or her environment, thus enhancing the ability to live, work, and play more independently. An environmental control system consists of a main control unit, an input method, a feedback unit or information display, and the devices to be controlled. More complex systems combine an ECU with a microcomputer or augmentative communication device. Typical input modes include switches, joystick, voice, keypad, or computer interface. ECUs utilize a variety of control schemes, including infrared, ultrasound, radio waves, and AC (alternating current) power lines. Guidelines are presented for choosing an ECU. A table lists 51 ECUs available, the method by which they are accessed, the types of devices controlled, and price range. Each product is then described, and the name, address, and telephone number of the producer or distributor is provided. (JDD)
