What Works Clearinghouse Rating
Peer reviewedMusatti, Tullia; And Others – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1981
Sixty children, prereaders and readers aged 4-6 years, matched color, shape, and letter features in pairs of cartoons. Older children and those able to read performed better, confirming the hypothesis that the development of some visual skills is a by-product of learning to read. (Author/SJL)

Rival, Christina; Olivier, Isabelle; Ceyte, Hadrien; Bard, Chantal – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 2004
The aim of the two present experiments was to examine the ontogenetic development of the dissociation between perception and action in children using the Duncker illusion. In this illusion, a moving background alters the perceived direction of target motion. Targets were held stationary while appearing to move in an induced displacement. In…

Peer reviewedChipman, Susan F.; Mendelson, Morton J. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1975
Elementary school students and adults were presented with a paired comparison task of visual complexity in which contour and presence or absence of structure in the patterns were manipulated. Results indicated that complexity judgments of all subjects were affected by the presence of structure at lower levels of contour. (GO)

Peer reviewedMaurer, Daphne; Barrera, Maria – Child Development, 1981
One- and two-month-old infants were shown schematic drawings of a human face with features arranged (1) naturally, (2) symmetrically but scrambled, and (3) asymmetrically and scrambled. Two-month-olds discriminated among all arangements and preferred the natural arrangement; one-month-olds showed no discrimination or preference. (Author/DB)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Infant Behavior, Infants, Perceptual Development
Peer reviewedMelkman, Rachel; And Others – Child Development, 1976
The preference for color or form as bases for similarity judgments among preschoolers (ages 2-5) and its relationship to the differentiation of form and color concepts as indexed by discrimination, identification, and labeling were investigated. (SB)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Concept Formation, Dimensional Preference, Preschool Education
Peer reviewedEtaugh, Claire; Turton, William J. – Journal of Genetic Psychology, 1977
Boys and girls in second and fourth grades were presented with a two-choice simultaneous form discrimination. The forms were five or ten-sided and symmetrical or asymmetrical. Boys performed better than girls and older children were more accurate than younger ones. (MS)

de Heering, Adelaide; Houthuys, Sarah; Rossion, Bruno – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 2007
Although it is acknowledged that adults integrate features into a representation of the whole face, there is still some disagreement about the onset and developmental course of holistic face processing. We tested adults and children from 4 to 6 years of age with the same paradigm measuring holistic face processing through an adaptation of the…

Peer reviewedCharlop, Marjorie H.; Carlson, Jerry – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1983
Reversal and nonreversal shifts in 19 2- to 14-year-old autistic children were studied. Results indicated that the older autistic children did better on reversal shifts than did younger children, who performed better on nonreversal shifts. Findings were consistent with those for normal children. (Author)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Autism, Children, Cognitive Ability
Peer reviewedChapman, Michael – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1981
The hypothesis that perceptual development proceeds from less to greater dimensional separability was tested by giving a speeded classification task to first and fourth graders. Results supported the hypothesis that development proceeds toward greater flexibility of attention rather than simply toward increasing separability. (Author/DB)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Attention, Children, Dimensional Preference
Peer reviewedKogan, Nathan – Developmental Psychology, 1975
A study of the differences in the estimates given by older and younger adults of the ages of stimulus persons distributed across the age continuum. (SDH)
Descriptors: Age, Age Differences, Older Adults, Pictorial Stimuli
Peer reviewedKopp, Claire B.; And Others – Child Development, 1975
This study was designed to determine whether modifying the task characteristics of the Stage 6 sensorimotor means-end problem (by introducing additional visual cues) aided task solution in children. Subjects were 80 children, ages 20-33 months. (CS)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Perceptual Motor Learning, Preschool Children, Problem Solving
Peer reviewedRosser, Rosemary A.; And Others – Child Development, 1984
The ability of 40 children four and five years of age to discriminate reflections and rotations of visual stimuli was examined in a kinetic imagery task. Results revealed that prediction accuracy was associated with the existence of orientation markers on the stimuli, as well as age, sex, type of discrimination, and several interactions among the…
