Peer reviewedRose, Susan A.; Feldman, Judith F.; Jankowski, Jeffery J.; Caro, Donna M. – Child Development, 2002
Examined developmental change and stability of visual expectation and reaction times among 5-, 7-, and 12-month-old term and preterm infants. Found that reaction times declined with age while anticipations increased. Infants with faster reaction times were more likely to anticipate upcoming events; this effect disappeared when time between stimuli…

Williams, David Brian – 1977
Three experiments examined the effects of selected factors of interval size, timbre, loudness, and length of the melodic pattern on children's ability to perceive, the motion of 2- and 3-pitch melodic patterns. Subjects for all experiments were 32 second- and 32 fifth-grade children. The task for each experiment consisted of identifying the motion…

Peer reviewedWilliams, Tannis MacBeth; Aiken, Leona S. – Developmental Psychology, 1975
Development of the ability to classify auditory patterns was studied at grades 2, 6, 10, and 12 and at adult age levels. Both accuracy and feature use in classification were consistent across age; the age changes that did occur appeared to be due to differences in perception rather than process. (JMB)

Peer reviewedAitken, P. P.; Hutt, Corinne – Child Development, 1974
Children, ages 3 to 10 were asked to rank random polygons, which differed in complexity according to interestingness and pleasingness. Complexity preferences varied with age. (ST)

Peer reviewedRileigh, Kathryn K.; Odom, Penelope B. – Developmental Psychology, 1972
Study found that auditory experience has an indirect influence on rhythm perception, but auditory involvement during the task does not. (Authors/MB)

Keogh, Barbara K. – 1970
This study was designed to consider effects of age, sex, intelligence, lateral usage, and lateral awareness on young children's performance of spatial organization tasks. The sample consisted of 79 Caucasian, middle socioeconomic status nursery school children (mean C.A. 57.80, S.D. 4.47 months), 44 boys and 35 girls. Spatial organization was…

Peer reviewedCook, Gregory L.; Odom, Richard D. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1988
Two experiments investigated perceptual primacy of dimensional and similarity relations in stimulus classifications of younger and older subjects. Results support a differential-sensitivity view of perceptual development which asserts that individuals at all ages primarily perceive and use separate relations. (RWB)
