Eviatar, Zohar; Ibrahim, Raphiq; Karelitz, Tzur M.; Simon, Anat Ben – Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, 2019
We tested the effects of orthography on text reading by comparing reading measures in Arabic and Hebrew-speaking adults. The languages are typologically very similar, but use different orthographies. We measured naming speed of single letters, words and nonwords, and visual processing. Arabic-speakers also performed some of the tasks in Hebrew. We…

Wei, Chun-Chun; Ma, Min-Yuan – Reading & Writing Quarterly, 2017
This study investigates the relationship between visual attention and reading time using a mobile electroencephalography device. The mobile electroencephalography device uses a single channel dry sensor, which easily measures participants' attention in the real-world reading environment. The results reveal that age significantly influences visual…

Peer reviewedRayner, Keith – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1986
Presents four experiments comparing the perceptual span in second-, fourth-, and sixth-grade readers and skilled adult readers. Suggests that the size of perceptual span is variable and influenced by text difficulty. Concludes that the size of perceptual span does not cause slow reading rates in beginning readers. (Author/DR)

Peer reviewedPollatsek, Alexander; Rayner, Keith – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1982
The functions of spaces between words in adult reading of text were investigated in three experiments. Results were consistent with a two-process theory in which filling parafoveal spaces disrupts guidance of the next eye movement and filling foveal spaces disrupts processing of the fixated word as well. (Author/RD)

Peer reviewedPatberg, Judythe; Yonas, Albert – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1978
Good and poor student readers and adults read texts in normal format and with 13 spaces between words. Wide spacing improved comprehension for poor readers but did not affect their reading efficiency, while it substantially impaired the efficiency of the other groups. Text difficulty did not interact significantly with spacing. (SJL)

Baumann, James F.; Schneider, Karen Wilson – 1979
The amount of print that 42 college students apprehended in 40 millisecond tachistoscopic flash presentations was monitored for strings of random letters, unrelated words, and words in context (sentences). The results indicated that mean apprehension spans per flash were 3.7 letters for random letters, 9.3 letters (2.0 words) for unrelated words,…

Herr, Selma E. – 1966
After a consideration of the causes of ineffective reading, this publication presents organized lessons (including 50 reading selections) for improving adult reading skills, and specific suggestions for securing the main idea, developing word power, developing such skills as skimming, following directions, visualization, and perceptual ideas, and…
