Go! Including Movement during Routines and Transitions
Orlowski, Marietta A.; Hart, Aaron
Young Children, v65 n5 p88-93 Sep 2010
Good schools for children ages 5 to 8 provide multiple opportunities for physical activity throughout the school day. Ideally, physical education, recess, extracurricular activities, and classroom activities together help ensure that children meet the recommended 60 minutes a day of structured activity and 60 of unstructured. Additionally, brief moments of physical activity in the classroom can improve children's attitude, attention, memory, and content achievement. Teachers can incorporate physical activity via games, integrated lessons, and routines and transitions. Games--the traditional way to offer physical activity in a classroom--are separate events provided as a break from learning content and completing work. Physical activity can also be integrated into content lessons. In this article, the authors offer simple strategies for incorporating physical activity into the morning routine, daily transitions, and times when children must be in line while waiting to move to another part of the building or outdoors.
