From 2005 to 2010, in an historic turnaround, the number of men enrolled in college increased faster than the number of women in the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) region, the West and the Northeast. The Midwest was the only region where enrollment by women increased faster than for men over this period. In the SREB region, men's enrollment went up 27 percent, while the number of women in college increased 23 percent. In 2010, women still outnumbered men in college almost six to four. Total college enrollment in SREB states topped 7 million in 2010--33.5 percent of the national total. For many years the increases in the college enrollment of women in the SREB region outpaced the gains for men. In the first half of the 1990s, the number of women increased 11 percent, while the number of men went up only 3 percent. That meant 251,211 more women enrolled in college compared with 61,238 more men during the period. In the last half of the 1990s, 232,995 more women enrolled (a 9 percent increase) and 114,284 more men (a 6 percent increase). Growth then accelerated after 2000. From 2000 to 2005, the number of men went up 13 percent (266,102) and the number of women went up 20 percent (550,695). The 2005 to 2010 rates of increase in men's enrollment exceeded those of women in every SREB state except Georgia and Kentucky; in all but four of the 13 Western states; in all but five of the 12 Midwestern states; and in all nine Northeastern states. For 30 years, women have outnumbered men among college students. This contrasts with the general population, where men outnumber women until age 25. The population is evenly divided for 25- to 44- year-olds, and women outnumber men beginning at age 45.
