Who Abstains? The Situational Meaning of Nonvoting.
Davis, Charles L.; Coleman, Kenneth M.
Social Science Quarterly, v64 n4 p764-76 Dec 1983
Survey data from recent (1980) samples of workers in Venezuela and from Mexico showed that the greater the array of viable choice available to the discontented potential voter, the more likely that the discontented individual will use the electoral arena to register his/her views and the less likely that nonvoting will be chosen as a vehicle for protest.
