Teaching and Learning with Online Historical Maps
Bolick, Cheryl Mason
Social Education, v70 n3 p133-135, 137 Apr 2006
Teaching social studies with historical maps allows teachers and students not only to examine a historical event or place, but to analyze the story behind the map. Historical maps can provide insight into the people and cultures of earlier times. Studying these historic maps may help students challenge the notion that people of earlier time periods viewed the world differently than people do today. Lessons that involve analysis of historical maps require that students examine not only the place and time the maps portray, but consider why the portrayal is what it is, and how perspectives have changed over time. Interactive historic maps are now being developed and posted on the internet. Interactive maps allow students and teachers to manipulate maps and use multiple resources to make sense of historical events. They are non-static representations of a time or place. Interactive maps allow students to interact with a map's story and make sense of it in a non-linear fashion. Interactive maps also draw upon external resources, such as letters, diaries, photographs, and newspapers. This article presents a small sample of historic map resources available on the internet for social studies teachers and students. (Contains 5 notes.)
