My Shadow & Me
Hahn, Nic
SchoolArts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v112 n3 p30-31 Nov 2012
As a middle school art teacher, the author has learned that it is difficult to get to know students in just one quarter. At her school, each student in grades six through eight takes one quarter of art every year. This means she has roughly nine weeks to teach them content, proper use of tools and media, and art history. The author describes a project that is perfect for teaching content while discovering the interests of her individual students. The author and her students start working on this project within two days of the beginning of each quarter. Students create a silhouette, or shadow, behind an actual photograph of themselves. The shadow and background reveal something personal about each student. The author shows students samples of the project from previous years, and they talk about the poses of the figures and the shadows behind them.
