Kilpatrick, Jeremy – School Science and Mathematics, 1978
The author provides a brief view of issues and developments in the field of problem solving in the light of progress made as well as implications for the future. (MN)
Descriptors: Information Processing, Instruction, Learning, Mathematics Education

Brown, Lois – School Science and Mathematics, 1975
After arguing that secondary students are often inept at solving word problems, and that this may be caused by their disinterest in the problems typically presented, the author presents eleven problems she considers to be more relevant to student interests. (SD)

Webb, Leland F.; Sherrill, James M. – School Science and Mathematics, 1974
Results of a 10-item mathematical word problem test taken by 80 preservice elementary teachers showed that those receiving accurate pictures accompanying each problem scored significantly higher than both those receiving no pictures and those having inaccurate diagrams; the "no picture" group scored significantly higher than the "inaccurate…

Sherrill, James M. – School Science and Mathematics, 1973
Three forms of a problem-solving test were given randomly to 322 tenth graders. Performance on the form containing accurate pictorial representations of items was significantly higher than on the form with only prose descriptions, which was in turn significantly higher than on the form with distorted pictorial representations. (DT)

Carman, Robert A. – School Science and Mathematics, 1972
Since skills at formulating and translating quantitative statements are given little attention in most classes, a language barrier may be hindering student understanding and performance in science. (Author/CP)
Descriptors: Communication Problems, Instruction, Measurement, Physical Sciences

Woerner, Janet J.; Stonehouse, Harold B. – School Science and Mathematics, 1988
This model is useful in identifying specific learning problems and in providing techniques for the teacher to motivate and teach students at all levels. What it is and how it can be used are discussed, illustrated by specific strategies for geometry and science. (MNS)
Descriptors: Geometry, Instruction, Learning Problems, Mathematics Instruction

Pereira-Mendoza, L.; Butt, A. – School Science and Mathematics, 1979
Two units are developed that provide the student with experience in constructing auxilary lines that are often needed in formulating geometric proofs. (MP)
Descriptors: Congruence, Geometry, Instruction, Lesson Plans

Mannix, Warren E. – School Science and Mathematics, 1975
A game modelled on football can be used to provide students with practice in solving algebraic equations. (SD)
Descriptors: Algebra, Experiential Learning, Games, Instruction

Byrkit, Donald R. – School Science and Mathematics, 1972
Descriptors: Algebra, Instruction, Mathematical Models, Mathematics Education

Brown, Stanley B.; Brown, L. Barbara – School Science and Mathematics, 1971
Descriptors: Critical Thinking, Discovery Processes, Instruction, Intermediate Grades

Bixby, Louis W. – School Science and Mathematics, 1970
Discusses a strategy for presenting science concepts via activities which include personal, self-sensitizing frames of reference for students. Examples include force and temperature measurement. (JM)
Descriptors: Instruction, Kinetics, Physical Sciences, Problem Solving

Lott, Johnny W.; Smith, Paul – School Science and Mathematics, 1979
Four problems are given and discussed involving reflection about a line or the reflection properties of conic sections. Solutions are given. (MP)
Descriptors: Algebra, Geometry, Instruction, Mathematics

Kjeseth, Steve – School Science and Mathematics, 1979
A technique is illustrated for solving relative motion problems using a maneuvering board and vector algebra. The technique can be used to visually illustrate properties of vector algebra in a non-theoretical context. (MP)
Descriptors: Algebra, Instruction, Learning Activities, Navigation

Cohen, Martin P. – School Science and Mathematics, 1979
The purpose of this study was to examine tendencies for students to be more successful in solving verbal problems based on situations for which they possess measured interest. (MP)
Descriptors: Educational Research, Instruction, Interests, Motivation

Lappan, Glenda; Winter, M. J. – School Science and Mathematics, 1979
Five calculator activities are described that are designed to explore ordered operations. Suggestions are given on mathematical objectives, strategies for solving, and possible extensions or follow-up activities. (MP)
Descriptors: Calculators, Computation, Elementary Education, Elementary School Mathematics
