Taking a Holistic Approach to Sustainability
Girouard, Miles
School Business Affairs, v77 n10 p21-22, 24 Nov 2011
The benefits of sustainability go way beyond improving the environment. School districts that choose to build facilities using sustainable principles reap the benefits of environmentally friendly, healthy establishments; attractive work spaces (which improve recruiting and retention); and significant operational cost savings. Districts realize these wonderful assets when project teams take a holistic approach that balances four critical clements: (1) healthy, productive environments; (2) capital costs; (3) sustainable design and delivery; and (4) life-cycle cost savings. By using this holistic approach, one will be certain to make wise choices, affecting students today and leaving a legacy for future generations.
