Grounded Theory as a Method for Asset-Based Exploration of Black Males in K-12. Sage Research Methods Cases Part 1
Rachael Sanders; Amanda S. Mayeaux
Sage Research Methods Cases
This case study shares the strengths and messiness of using grounded theory as a methodology from the perspective of a researcher. The chosen grounded-theory approach closely resonated with the study's objective, aiming to establish a novel framework for race-conscious leadership. Grounded theory offers an open and flexible method to examine an issue from an asset-based perspective. Data were collected through semistructured one-on-one interviews via Zoom. Twenty-eight Black males, who are leaders in their community, volunteered to be participants. They answered seven planned interview questions in interviews. Their primary and secondary school experiences varied based on their age and school setting. Data collection and analysis followed the coding processes: open coding, axial coding, selective coding, coding for the process, and theory development. Once the coding process was complete, nine themes emerged and addressed the three research questions. This case study demonstrates that researchers should be mindful that the intention of this study was to steer from a deficit mindset to an asset-based approach about Black males, and future studies are encouraged to do the same.
