Capturing Homework Routines On-Screen: A Multimodal Methodology for Conducting Online Research Studies with School Children. Sage Research Methods: Doing Research Online
Vanessa Figueiredo; Catherine Ann Cameron
Sage Research Methods Cases
This case study presents a multistage and multimodal methodology for conducting online research studies using video conferencing tools. We designed our methodology to capture how Brazilian schoolchildren (ages 9-11) transact, alone or with others, homework information-searching routines. Our case study presents the steps involved in designing an online study investigating children's transactions in context; points out what opportunities and constraints can arise when conducting an online study and how to address them; and describes how to design an online study that accommodates the needs of child-caregiver dyads. We used interviews, observations, and critical incident sessions to capture contextual and interactional aspects involved in learning experiences (e.g., homework) occurring outside of formal learning institutions. We present two case studies to illustrate the opportunities and constraints our methodology presents to researchers interested in conducting online studies with schoolchildren. Our multistage and multimodal methodology supports rapport building, study motivation, and captures multiple examples of homework information-searching routines. However, researchers can encounter challenges concerning technology and internet access, and research-participant bias that need to be addressed. Developmental psychologists, educators, and information scientists can utilize our methodology to investigate the rich textures of children's learning in home contexts and enhance after-school programming.
