Trauma can impact learning, behavior, and social, emotional, and psychological functioning. Traumatized children are more likely to have poorer school performance, decreased I.Q. and reading ability, lower grade point average, and more days of school absence (Stein & Kendall, 2004). Trauma also can alter the way children and adults view themselves and their world, affecting how they process information and respond to their environment. Children who have experienced serious trauma and loss need effective interventions to restore their sense of safety and enable them to think and cope in resilient ways. This article illustrates the SITCAP[R] (Structured Sensory Intervention for Children, Adults, and Parents) treatment model being used with families and schools. The premise of this approach is that traumatic memories are experienced at a sensory level and must be reactivated in a safe environment in order to be tolerated and managed with a sense of power and a feeling of safety. Treatment includes a series of drawing tasks and specific questions that target the sensations which are experienced in a traumatic event.
