Supporting Student-Athletes with the Learning Management System
Karla K. Gavin
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, United States Sports Academy
This research study investigated student-athletes' perspective of how faculty members in face-to-face courses utilized the learning management system (LMS). The focus was on the use of the LMS, accessibility to the LMS, and connectivity capabilities to the LMS on charter buses during travel for competitions. Twenty-three NCAA Division II student-athletes were interviewed via Zoom or phone for this study. They were asked six questions which related to use of, accessibility to, and connectivity with the LMS. The interviews were transcribed in NVivo and then the responses to the questions were coded. After the coding process was completed, three themes came to the forefront. These themes included uploading class materials which related to how the faculty members used the LMS, staying on pace with class, which correlated with accessibility to the LMS, and Wi-Fi being suspect on the charter buses, which corresponded to connectivity. The conclusions reached in this study included the following: student-athletes indicated that access to the LMS and specifically access to course materials was critical to staying on pace with their courses and to their success in their classes overall. They also stated that connectivity to the LMS was limited while traveling by charter bus or via a smaller university owned vehicle. The majority of students waited to connect with the hotel Wi-Fi, which meant many hours of downtime during travel.
