Children's Depressive Symptoms and Physical Activity
Katie T. Clark
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, Rivier University
Depression is a mental health diagnosis that affects many children and adolescents each year. While traditional methods of treatment include therapy and medication, physical activity could also be used as an additional tool to help combat depressive symptoms. A total of 51 articles were found to address the possible benefits of physical activity for depression in children/adolescents. This systematic literature review discusses the following topics: general benefits of physical activity, the impact of parent and family support for children and adolescents, gender differences, intensity of activities, organized sports, screen use, sleep and previously reviewed analyses. In general, a body that engages in regular physical activities is less likely to report depressive symptoms.
