The Impact of Theory-Based Trainings on the Level of Creativity of Family Day Care Providers in New York City
Zbarskaya, Olga
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Walden University
Creative thinking in child care providers can foster creativity in children. The literature documented a general decline in creativity in America since the 1990s and low creativity among Latino children in particular. The purpose of this quantitative analysis was to fill a gap in the literature about the effectiveness of trainings based in 2 theories of creativity development; Csikszentmihalyi's theory of spontaneous flow and Carson's structured 7 steps for Latina child care providers. The primary research question addressed the effects of 2 types of training (based on flow and 7 steps) each compared to a randomly assigned control group on 5 categories of creativity (fluency, originality, abstractness of titles, elaboration, and resistance to premature closure). A 3 x 5 repeated measures analysis of variance based on a post-test only cross-sectional design resulted in a significant interaction effect and significant simple main effects (i.e., differences among categories of creativity within each training program and differences among programs within each category of creativity). Both flow and 7 steps training approaches significantly improved creativity for 4 of the 5 categories when compared to controls. Abstractness of titles was significantly lower for both approaches and for the control group. Secondary research questions addressed the extent to which programs were sensitive to the Latina culture and the extent to which participants were satisfied with training. Independent sample t tests found Carson's approach was more culturally sensitive, even though both received high ratings, and found no difference in participant satisfaction. A panel of experts rated training fidelity high for both programs. Implications for positive social change include validation of two theories that can be used to inform improved creativity among Latina child care providers and ultimately improve the creativity of the children they serve.
