Shoeboxes and Taxes: Integrated Course Design Unleashes New Creativity for a Veteran Teacher

This article discusses how the author used an integrated course design model to create new learning activities in her course on federal taxation. The shoebox case--a simulation where students are given realistic documents to use in preparing a tax return--gave her students an opportunity to construct new knowledge. This activity supported the dimensions of application, caring, and learning how to learn. Furthermore, students learned to apply content from the class as they created their shoeboxes, researched to find information and source documents for the case, and gained confidence in tax preparation as they developed their cases and solved another team's case. The students were enthusiastic and competitive as they created an original, comprehensive, and challenging case for another team to solve. (Contains 2 tables.)
