Argues that multiple language use in learner output is not always and exclusively indicative of the deficient nature of the language learner with respect to an idealized monolingual second language linguistic norm. Describes an approach to the study of writing processes based on the analysis of temporal aspects of the writing event. The approach involves recording the keystroke presses made during production of a text using a word processor, and analyzing such features as pausing, fluency, and revision activity. (Author/VWL)
