Before Coffee, Facebook: New Literacy Learning for 21st Century Teachers
Roach, Audra K.; Beck, Jessica J.
Language Arts, v89 n4 p244-255 Mar 2012
And so a middle school language arts teacher begins her Saturday. Before coffee, Facebook. In this themed issue on professional development in an era of nick.com, the authors propose that teachers' new literacy learning is as close as their own screens. Teachers, too, live literate lives online in this new age of composition, with impulses to write that are "newly technologized, socialized, and networked." In this article, the authors illustrate how teachers might use their own new literacies experiences to launch new literacies pedagogy. Readers will hear the voice of one digital insider teacher (Jessica), braving a literate life online. And readers will hear the voice of one teacher educator/researcher (Audra), looking closely at Jessica's writing to see how she navigated online audiences so flexibly. In the end, readers will hear them reason together about how insider understandings of new literacies might enter 21st century writing classrooms. (Contains 2 figures and 1 table.)
