Shulman, Harvey G.; Davison, Thomas C. B. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1977
Decisions about whether pairs of letter strings are both words or not are faster for semantically related words than unrelated words. Two experiments showed the semantic relatedness effect is greatly reduced when orthographically illegal, unpronounceable strings were used as negative items. Lexical decisions involve options on codes representing…

Kleiman, Glenn M. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1975
Three experiments explored whether recoding to speech during reading occurs before or after lexical access, or not at all. Tests determined the effects of a concurrent shadowing task on lexical information retrieval. Results indicate a model of reading in which speech recoding occurs after lexical access, with temporary word storage. (CHK)

Jacoby, Larry L. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1983
Experiments demonstrating that perceptual identification and recognition memory both rely on memory for single prior processing episodes, contrary to common assumption, are reported. The balance between data-driven and conceptually-driven processing in reading is explored, and the effects of changing the subject's reliance on one or the other…

Levy, Betty Ann – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1977
This research investigates the role of speech recoding, particularly its relationship to meaning analysis during reading. Experiment I documents a speech processing conflict; Experiment II analyzes this conflict; and Experiment III demonstrates contributions of speech and meaning processes to reading memory. Results are related to three classes of…

Terry, Pamela; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
Reports on experiments designed to explore the way the processing unit depends on the information in the component letters and the information contained in their arrangements in a familiar letter string. Hypotheses were tested by degrading the quality of individual letters and by spacing the letters irregularly. (CLK)

Stanners, Robert F.; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1975
Describes an experiment measuring response latency which required subjects to make a word-nonword decision in response to a visually presented item. (AM)

Graesser, Arthur, C.; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1980
Describes a question-answering procedure for probing the reader's internal representation of prose. Examines two dimensions of a reader's conceptual organization of plot: hierarchical level and relational density of propositions. (PMJ)

Samuels, S. J.; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1978
Reports on a study of word recognition in second grade, fourth grade, sixth grade, and college students, which investigated characteristics of word processing (holistic versus component) at various stages of reading development. (AM)
