Allen, Leslie R. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1972
The Science Curriculum Improvement Study program is meeting its own objectives. There were significant differences between cognitive performance of SCIS and control classes related to materials studied. (AL)

Lowery, Lawrence F.; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1980
Investigates cumulative effects of SCIS in terms of students' attitudes. Hypothesized and supported is that students exposed to the complete SCIS program would show a greater degree of positive attitude toward science, experimenting, and the scientist than would those not exposed to SCIS. Results indicating sex differences in attitudes are…

Linn, Marcia C.; Thier, Herbert D. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
Reports a study undertaken to determine the effect of the Science Curriculum Improvement Study (SCIS) on logical thinking. Evidence of logical thinking was measured as the ability to explain compensating variables that occurred in a cart experiment presented on silent 16 mm film. (GS)

Somers, Ronald L.; Lagdamen, Juan M., Jr. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
Studied the intellectual differences between third and fourth grade Filipino children who had studied Science--A Process Approach (SAPA) and others who had studied a traditional curriculum. The SAPA children performed significantly better than the control group on a test of observing, comparing, and classifying simple geometric objects. (MLH)
Descriptors: Curriculum Evaluation, Educational Research, Elementary Education, Elementary School Science

Krebs, Eugene W.; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1978
Measures whether pre-school children (ages 34 to 65 months) can master concepts of the first five exercises of K-level science--A Process Approach (SAPA) within seven weeks with four lessons of 10 minutes each week. More than 90 percent of the sample of 226 achieved at the 90 percent competency level. (CP)

Barufaldi, James P.; Swift, Jennifer W. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1980
Questions Whether first-grade student participation in selected experimental activities from the BSCS-ESSP enhances skills in listening as measured by the Cooperative Primary Series Listening Test (CPSLT). (CS)
Descriptors: Elementary Education, Elementary School Science, Grade 1, Listening Skills

Champagne, Audrey B.; Klopfer, Leo E. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1974
Discusses formative evaluation (those evaluation activities carried out while a curriculum is still being developed) and relates this to the development of the Individualized Science (IS) program at the University of Pittsburgh. (PEB)
Descriptors: Biology, Curriculum, Curriculum Development, Elementary School Science

Froehlich, Kurt P. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1974
This study was designed to see if objectives accompanying test items increased cognitive learning. The results indicate that objectives accompanying pretest items facilitate student study and preparation for posttests, but objectives accompanying posttest items inhibited performance. (BR)
Descriptors: Cognitive Objectives, Educational Objectives, Educational Research, Elementary School Science

Linn, Marcia C.; Peterson, Rita W. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1973
This study was conducted to analyze the classification ability of middle class, culturally diverse, and visually impaired children after instruction in a Science Curriculum Improvement Study (SCIS) unit. The SCIS unit was effective in improving student abilities to classify. (PS)
Descriptors: Ability, Academic Ability, Classification, Educational Research

Krockover, Gerald H.; Malcolm, Marshall D. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1977
Describes research undertaken to determine if Science Curriculum Improvement Study (SCIS) can be instrumental in helping children either maintain or develop a positive self-concept. A total of 189 students in grades 3-6 were assigned to treatment and control groups for a period of four and one-half months. Findings did not reveal overall…

Koballa, Thomas R. Jr. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1986
Developed and validated anecdotal and data-summary persuasive communications and tested their effect on preservice teachers' attitudes toward supplementing traditional, textbook-based science programs with either Science-A Process Approach or the Science Curriculum Improvement Study. Results show that anecdotal nature communications were more…
