Reports a study of consultants' critiques on the records of patients treated by house officers which indicates that they provide a convenient tool for evaluation of clinical performance by house officers and an indirect measurement of the quality of teaching and patient care within a medical training program. A model medical care evaluation (MCE) program was implemented at the Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center. The program was evaluated by quantitative and qualitative observational techniques, questionnaires, and interviews, and by comparing committees for which the implementation was highly successful with those less successful.
