Reviews work on human capital that has been done in economics and considers its implications for the role of alimony. Argues that the human capital model of family interaction considerably broadens the role that alimony can and should play. Examines data to discover the underlying determinants of alimony awards. The economic situation of older, single childbearers before and after giving birth is compared with their married counterparts and teen mothers. Similarities among nonmarried women across all ages and substantial variations for older mothers are found. Specific effects of a birth on economic status are discussed for each group. (EMK)

The effect of marriage type (polygamy vs. monogamy) on reproductive decisions is investigated using comparative data from the 1988, 1989, and 1993 Demographic and Health Surveys of Ghana and Kenya. Multivariate analysis is used. Inconclusive results are discussed with a focus on future research directions. (Author/EMK)
