Analyzes social and ideological changes in U.S. society that resulted in definition of world as containing two spheres, private sphere of women and public sphere of men, and consequences of this view. Argues that the two-spheres imagery was ideological tool used to justify restrictions on women's involvement in economic and political activity and men's involvement in family and community. (NB)
