Verbal and nonverbal measures of higher cognitive functions were used to examine the degree of difference between the thought processes of culturally deprived and learning disabled children. Sixty normal children and 76 learning disabled children (ages 5 to 12) from regular and special classes in Israel were rated in hyperactivity by their teachers on the Conners Abbreviated Scale. Both German and American children with learning disabilities performed significantly poorer than their age-level controls on semantic, syntactic, auditory memory, and word retrieval tasks.
