Two stage multiple-comparison procedures give an exact solution to problems of power and Type I errors, but require equal sample sizes in the first stage. This paper suggests a method of evaluating the experimentwise Type I error probability when the first stage has unequal sample sizes. (Author/BW)

The routine epsilon approximate test in repeated measures designs when the condition of circularity is unfulfilled uses an erroneous formula in the case of two or more groups. Because this may lead to underestimation of the deviation from circularity when the subject number is small, a correction is proposed. (Author/SLD)

This Monte Carlo simulation studied the relative power of 8 tests for sphericity in randomized block designs where sample size was small (10, 15, 20, and 30) and population covariance matrices of dimension-to-sample size ratio approached 1.0. The locally best invariant test demonstrated substantial power to detect departures from sphericity. (SLD)

Some approximate formulas are presented for standard errors of estimated regression coefficients in two-level designs. If the researcher can make a reasonable guess as to parameters occurring in the model, this approximation can be a guide to the choice of sample sizes at either level. (SLD)

A method is proposed for calculating the sample size needed to achieve acceptable statistical power with a given test. The minimally important difference significant (MIDS) criterion for sample size is explained and supported with recommendations for determining sample size. The observed probability "p" is the social scientist's primary tool for evaluating the outcome of statistical hypothesis tests. The small-sample accuracy of nonnull asymptotic distributions of several functions of "p" was studied. Implications for use of the approximations are discussed. (SLD)

An equating design in which two groups of examinees from slightly different populations are administered a different test form with a subset of common items is widely used. This paper presents standard errors and a simulation that verifies the equation for large samples for an equipercentile equating procedure for this design. (Author/BS)

Type I error rates for Yao's, James' first-order and second-order, and Johansen's tests of equality of mean vectors for two independent samples were estimated for various conditions defined by the degree of heteroscedasticity and nonnormality.
