Lutz, J. Gary; Cundari, Leigh A. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1989
Means of identifying sources of rejection of hypotheses regarding linear multivariate statistical models are discussed. Problems with the use of a global test using Roy's largest root criterion and means of solving them are presented, along with a practical application of the techniques. (TJH)

Smith, Philip J.; And Others – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1985
When the experimental units are measured twice, and the response variable is dichotomous, the equality of the two proportions is usally assessed by Mc Nemar's (1947) test. In this paper, Bayesian methods are presented for testing hypotheses regarding the two success probabilities in light of complete and incomplete data. (Author/BW)

Harwell, Michael R.; Serlin, Ronald C. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1989
Two forms, pure-rank and mixed-rank, of a nonparametric, general, linear model-based statistic that can be used to test several hypotheses are presented. A Monte Carlo study was used to investigate the distributional properties of these forms, and their use is discussed. (SLD)

Szatrowski, Ted – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1982
Known results for testing and estimation problems for patterned means and covariance matrices with explicit linear maximum likelihood estimates are applied to the block compound symmetry problem. An example involving educational testing is provided. (Author/JKS)

Ramsey, Philip H. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1980
Disagreements have arisen about the robustness of the t test in normal populations with unequal variances. Employing liberal but objective standards for assessing robustness, it is shown that the t test is not always robust to the assumption of equal population variances even when sample sizes are equal. Wilcox, Rand R. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1984
Two stage multiple-comparison procedures give an exact solution to problems of power and Type I errors, but require equal sample sizes in the first stage. This paper suggests a method of evaluating the experimentwise Type I error probability when the first stage has unequal sample sizes. (Author/BW)

Carr, John W.; And Others – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1982
Several randomized response models for gathering self-report data when persons are asked sensitive questions are reviewed. A new general model for reducing error by asking questions conditional upon earlier answers is introduced. Hypothesis testing and confidence-interval procedures are demonstrated for data collected by the randomized response…

Keselman, H. J.; And Others – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1993
This article shows how a multivariate approximate degrees of freedom procedure based on the Welch-James procedure as simplified by S. Johansen (1980) can be applied to the analysis of repeated measures designs without assuming covariance homogeneity. A Monte Carlo study illustrates the approach. (SLD)

Viana, Marlos A. G. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1991
A Bayesian solution is suggested to the problem of jointly estimating "k is greater than 1" binomial parameters in conjunction with the problem of testing, in a Bayesian sense, the hypothesis "H" of parametric homogeneity. Applications of the estimates are illustrated with several types of data, including ophthalmological…

Rogosa, David; Willett, John B. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1985
A five by five covariance matrix representing longitudinal measurements at five occasions is used to illustrate that markedly different types of learning curves may generate indistinguishable covariance structures. An excellent fit of a simplex structure can be misleading. Common uses of covariance structure models for growth studies are…

Becker, Betsy Jane – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1992
Combining information to estimate standardized partial regression coefficients in a linear model is discussed. A combined estimate obtained from the pooled correlation matrix is proposed, and its large sample distribution is obtained. The method is generalized to handle a random effects model in which correlation parameters vary across studies.…

Becker, Betsy Jane – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1991
The observed probability "p" is the social scientist's primary tool for evaluating the outcome of statistical hypothesis tests. The small-sample accuracy of nonnull asymptotic distributions of several functions of "p" was studied. Implications for use of the approximations are discussed. (SLD)

Hedges, Larry V. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1992
The use of statistical methods to combine the results of independent empirical research studies (metanalysis) has a long history, with work mainly divided into tests of the statistical significance of combined results and methods for combining estimates across studies. Methods of metanalysis and their applications are reviewed. (SLD)

Raudenbush, Stephen W.; Bryk, Anthony S. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1985
To facilitate meta-analysis of diverse study findings, a mixed linear model with fixed random effects is presented and illustrated with data from teacher expectancy experiments. The standardized effect size is viewed as random and the variation among effect sizes is modeled as a function of study characteristics. (Author/BS).

Nandakumar, Ratna; Stout, William – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1993
A detailed investigation is provided of Stout's statistical procedure (the computer program DIMTEST) for testing the hypothesis that an essentially unidimensional latent trait model fits observed binary item response data from a psychological test. Three refinements achieve greater power. The revised approach is validated using real data sets.…
