Peer reviewedLehrer, Richard; Randle, Lynn – Journal of Educational Computing Research, 1987
An experimental study compared the instructional effectiveness of Logo programming, commercially available software designed to aid composition and problem solving, and traditional teaching methods for low socioeconomic status first-grade students. Both software environments enhanced problem solving performance for a novel task, but Logo was most…

Peer reviewedLehrer, Richard; And Others – Journal of Educational Computing Research, 1986
This study examined the instructional effectiveness of three software learning environments--LOGO, drill and practice, and teacher-directed activities--for preschool special needs children. Cognitive distancing was applied to classify children and child-software interactions; dependent measures included indicators of problem solving, skill…

Peer reviewedDalton, David W.; Goodrum, David A. – Journal of Educational Computing Research, 1991
Describes a study that investigated the effects of computer programing activities, supplemented with problem-solving strategy instruction, on programing skills and on learner attitudes toward computers and toward problem-solving skills. The instruction of elementary students in LOGO and junior high students in BASIC is described, and further…

Peer reviewedDugdale, Sharon; DeKoven, Elyon; Ju, Mi-Kyung – Journal of Educational Computing Research, 1998
A study of 50 students (grade 9) enrolled in a computer course found that home computer access for females was a predictor of early success for using computers as a learning resource and that enrollment in a computer course was greater for females who had access to home computers. Initial advantages diminished with continued use of computers. (PEN)

Peer reviewedKing, Alison – Journal of Educational Computing Research, 1989
Describes study that was designed to explore the verbal interaction and problem solving behaviors occurring within small learning groups of fourth graders working cooperatively on a computer-assisted problem solving task. Ability groupings are described and factors relating to the successful completion of the task are discussed. (28 references)…

Peer reviewedBurns, Barbara; Hagerman, Alison – Journal of Educational Computing Research, 1989
Discussion of achievement motivation and children's ideas about themselves as learners focuses on a study of third graders that examined the effects of LOGO programing on performance. Incremental and entity theories of intelligence are explained, and treatment of the experimental group and the control group are described. (26 references) (LRW)

Peer reviewedMandinach, Ellen B.; Linn, Marcia C. – Journal of Educational Computing Research, 1986
In this review of the research on how current computer learning environments can foster the acquisition of complex cognitive skills, two issues emerge: (1) what cognitive accomplishments are likely in the computer environment; and (2) what factors predispose students to benefit from the environment. (MBR)

Winn, William; Berninger, Virginia; Richards, Todd; Aylward, Elizabeth; Stock, Pat; Lee, Yen-Ling; Lovitt, Dan – Journal of Educational Computing Research, 2006
Two groups of twelve dyslexic children and twelve good readers attended a two-week class during the summer following their enrollment in grades 4-6. The topic was the marine environment and focused on the adventures of an orca whale that had lost its family and needed the children's help. The children attended class for three hours each day, 45…
