Using Cinema and Literature to Explore Existentialism
Whipple, Jennifer; Tucker, Catherine
Journal of Creativity in Mental Health, v7 n1 p95-106 2012
This article describes how the book "When Nietzsche Wept: A Novel of Obsession" and the movie "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" can be used to help counseling graduate students understand existential theory and its application to clients. Yalom's Four Givens of Existence, which consists of freedom and responsibility, meaninglessness, existential isolation, and death, are discussed in relationship to characters in the novel and film. An outline for recreating the assignment is included.
