Preoperative Preparation for Cardiac Surgery Facilitates Recovery, Reduces Psychological Distress, and Reduces the Incidence of Acute Postoperative Hypertension.
Anderson, Erling A.
Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, v55 n4 p513-20 Aug 1987
Cardiac surgery patients were assigned to information-only, information-plus-coping, or control preoperative preparation groups. Preoperatively, both experimental groups were significantly less anxious than were controls. Both experimental groups increased patients' belief in control over recovery. Postoperatively, experimental patients were less emotionally distressed, made better physical and psychological recoveries, and had lower incidence of hypertension than did controls. (Author/NB)
