The Problem of Equivalence in Contrastive Analysis

Challenges the notion that linguistic units which are equivalent from the point of view of being translated with ease from one language to another have a common deep structure. This notion is not seen as feasible in a transformational generative framework. (CLK)

The Critical Sounds of German: A Taxonomy

A report on a study to identify the relationship between subjects' age and their ability to imitate critical sounds of German. By having 210 American subjects repeat 20 critical German sounds in a non-critical context, a hierarchy of these sounds was established. Methodological conclusions are indicated. (AMH)

The Psycholinguistic Analysis and Measurement of Interference Errors

A description of an analysis of 10,000 errors made by Finns and Swedes who were learning Finnish or Swedish as a foreign language. A new classification of errors is established and a precise definition of language mixing is given. Five types of errors are described. (AMH)
