The authors discuss methodological and theoretical issues in psychological investigations of infant attention, fixation times, habituation, and intelligence. Limitations of current information-processing research on the nature of intelligence are discussed. Major criticisms are that the tasks are static; lack of generalizability from the laboratory to the real world; and collective intellect, motives, goals, circumstances, and ambiguity are not addressed in either theory or research. A new analysis of data from 15 cognitive tasks completed by 93 subjects with scores on the Cattell Culture Fair test show that differences in Cattell score systematically affected performance on some tasks more than on others. To clarify the relationships between reaction time (RT) variability and intelligence, RT distributions from 303 male Navy recruits were partitioned into 16 fast-to-slow latency bands calculated with measures of mental ability. The slowest bands (worst trials) were the best predictors of intelligence and working memory performance. (SLD)
