The Feeding of Great Children: The Impact of Nutrition on Learning
Schmidle, Pamela
Exceptional Parent, v40 n2 p20-21 Feb 2010
More and more research is showing that excessive sugars, dyes, preservatives, and possibly even milk and wheat products can affect activity level, attention, interactions, confidence, and sense of well being, all factors that impact a child's ability to learn. A child cannot be asked to make healthy food choices while the rest of the family makes unhealthy ones. In order for change to occur the entire family must be committed to this important challenge. When children's diets are rich with the necessary nutrients for growth and performance, and not full of processed foods that are laden with excessive sugars, chemicals, dyes and preservatives, and for some, milk and wheat products, they will feel calmer, healthier and more confident. They are able to focus on given tasks and are rightly proud of their accomplishments. The change starts with an awareness of what the children are eating, in the home and at school.
